The Jessica Blinn Quartet features members of Olympia's Cool Jazz Society, which is a collective of like-minded local musicians who gather in pursuit of beautiful melodies, laid-back grooves, fine wines and good food. Started by Lee Chun, Daven Tillinghast, and Jessica Blinn in autumn of 2006, CJS concentrates on works by Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock, and also offers classy versions of standards, even a few originals. The lineup may change from gig to gig, but they always have the same relaxed approach and enthusiasm for this beautiful material. Visit the weblink at left to see the newest recordings with Daven and Jessica in January; the old recordings are from their debut performance at Tugboat Annie's Spring of '07. Lately Jessica and Daven have been playing at the beautiful Cliff House Restaurant in Tacoma with Cameron Arneson on upright bass and Syd Potter on flugelhorn. They are happy to announce a recording is in the works, due for release this summer.

Shelly Rudolph Duo
2:00-3:15 pm |
We're excited to announce that Shelly Rudolph, accompanied by guitarist Chance Hayden, will be joining us for the Swing Band Festival! The two have performed together in the Portland area at various clubs, and Chance will also be part of Shelly's band when she returns to Mayfield Lake for the second annual Harmony Jazz and Wine Festival in september. at the Swing Band Festival, Shelly will be performing jazz standards from the big band era, as well as providing a tantalizing preview of some of her original tunes that she'll be performing as the headline evening act on Sept. 12. Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, Shelly spent much of her time in her mother’s art gallery surrounded by visual and performance artists of all types. She soaked up the creative energy and experimented with many forms of media – from drawing, to painting, to writing, to dance, to music, and found her bliss in song. The freedom, intimacy and beauty of jazz & blues captured her spirit and unleashed a powerful and soul filled voice that was hidden within this soft-spoken girl. Inspired by the likes of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Shelly quickly went from listener to performer sharing the stage with local favorites Don Latarski, Emmett Williams and Warren Rand and soon had her own weekly gig at Jo Federigo’s, the hottest jazz club in town. She followed musical pursuits to New York City, Portland and Los Angeles where she began to write and perform her own material as well as unfold her interpretations of favorite jazz standards and soul ballads. Her classic yet fresh sound - sweet and sultry, subtle and rich – has garnered invitations to tour Japan, Korea and the West Indies and made her a feature in jazz venues on both coasts of the U.S. Chance Hayden began playing guitar at age eight and taking private lessons at ten. By fifteen he formed a rock and roll band and released a seven-inch single. During his junior and senior years of high school he was dual enrolled at Clark College, and performed with both schools’ jazz ensembles. At that time, Chance was recognized regionally for his talent winning five Outstanding Musician Awards at various competitions with his high school jazz band. In the spring of 2005 he toured Hawaii the Clark College Jazz Ensemble, just before receiving both his High School Diploma and Associates in Arts degree at the same time. Understanding that the study of jazz at a university level college would provide a well-rounded musical education, Chance transferred to the PSU Jazz Studies program, where he completed his Bachelor’s of Music Performance in Jazz, graduating in 2008 with the distinction of youngest to do so. He leads an array of groups, from small combos to a nine-piece electric salute to Miles Davis to Troubled Boots, his Vintage Americana project, and also performs avidly as a sideman to artists such as Tom Grant, Darrell Grant, Devin Phillips and the Oregon Jazz Orchestra.

Robert Moore has evolved a sound uniquely his own, mixing his Southern roots influences of soul and gospel into his own distinct interpretations of bebop and swinging jazz. Shadings of King Pleasure, Mark Murphy, Mose Allison, & Ella are heard alongside those of Otis Redding, Roger Miller & classic blues shouters. Whether leading with his horn into familiar standards, scatting imaginative lines straight from the heart, blowing creative lines on the harmonica, or exposing listeners to interspersed originals, Moore cuts to the heart of a song, opening up sounds in new ways & winning fans with his frequent wry notes of humor. A long-time resident of Birmingham, Alabama, Moore has been heard in Southern jazz clubs from New Orleans to North Carolina, and has recently moved his base to Portland, Oregon, where he performs regularly. In Japan, where American jazz is particularly revered, his tours have been received with wild appreciation and enthusiasm. |
